AFS in Kenya

AFS is now recruiting students from Kenya to participate in the YES Program.

The AFS USA Academic Year Program is designed to provide students with a wonderful opportunity to live with an American host family, be part of an American community and attend an American high school. Along with this opportunity please there also comes responsibility. This is an academic program, and host families will assume that students have chosen to participate in the program because they are interested in furthering their education through studies at an American high school, even if they have “already graduated” or are not depending on credits from this year to count towards their graduation in their home country.

Schools also expect that the students they agree to host are coming on this program to study and to become members of their high school community. Most schools are hoping that the American students in the high school will learn as much as the exchange student by virtue of their interaction on a daily basis in classes, in school clubs and activities. All AFS students are expected to attend school on a regular basis, to complete all work assigned both in class and outside of class and show continuous effort throughout the year to work to their fullest potential.

YES program features include:
  • Enhancement and Leadership activities organized by each area hosting a group of YES students. Local volunteers plan six different activities throughout the academic year.
  • 2 ½ -day Arrival Orientation in Washington, DC with all YES students, prior to onward travel to welcome orientation sites in each student’s host-community.
  • 3-day End of Stay debriefing in Washington, DC with all YES students after the locally-organized end-of-stay activities in each student’s host-community.
  • Monthly stipend of $125 starting in the month of August and ending in the month of June.
  • Incidentals Allowance of $300 provided for all YES students meant to cover expenses such as school activity fees, a winter coat, school pictures, team uniform or laboratory fees, books, etc.
  • Full medical insurance
