8/2/2005 - AFS International President, Francisco Cazal to visit Ghana

Francisco “Tachi” Cazal will be in Ghana from August 4th to the 9th. The visit will be the first by an AFS International President to Ghana.

A priority for Mr. Cazal will be to meet old and new supporters of AFS in Ghana and the overall goal of the visit will be to strengthen the AFS presence in Ghana and in Africa. Steve Wallace, a member of the Board of Trustees of AFS International, the founder of the Omanhene Cocoa Bean Company and a former AFS exchange student to Ghana (summer, 1978) will accompany Mr. Cazal on the visit.

“To be an effective President and help AFS reach more young people in more countries around the world it is critical that I meet with as many of the people who make AFS happen and help get the word out about AFS to as many people as possible outside our organization,” said Mr. Cazal before leaving on his trip to Ghana, “AFS is committed to establishing close ties and a productive dialogue with Ghanaian stakeholders. We firmly believe that to be successful in bringing to this world the best in intercultural youth exchange programs, we must be mutually engaged in a lively exchange of ideas and in a productive dialogue with Ghanaian cultural, diplomatic and business leaders.”

“This visit by Mr. Cazal is a wonderful opportunity for AFS in Ghana.” said Emmanuel Annan, the Partner Director of AFS/Ghana Intercultural Exchange Programs (IEP), “We hope that one of the results of the visit will be a strengthening of our programs and of the intercultural learning experience as we seek to expand AFS Programs in Ghana and throughout the West African sub-region.”

There are numerous activities planned to coincide with Mr. Cazal’s visit. Among the most important meetings will be a planned courtesy call on the President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, as well as meetings with government officials and other influential stakeholders. Mr. Cazal will participate in a symposium at which he will present a speech on the role of AFS intercultural learning programs in creating a more just and peaceful world. The symposium will also feature speakers who will address issues surrounding the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD), a vision and a strategic framework for Africa’s renewal. A reception scheduled for August 8th will be held at the Alisa North Ridge Hotel for members of the local and international business and diplomatic community.
