9/30/2005 - THE JANUS: A RECORD OF THE UNIQUE HISTORY OF AFS
A publication of AFS International’s Archives and Communications division since 1987, The Janus is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and disseminating the remarkable and unique history of AFS. The publication is also dedicated to recording the major contributions that AFS has made to advance the cause of peace and of intercultural understanding.
You will find articles about former AFS participants who have achieved recognition as diplomats, educators, business executives, and about individuals who are active and concerned members of their communities. The Janus also focuses on the current AFS participants who are making a positive contribution to creating and shaping a truly global community united by the bonds of intercultural understanding. This issue features a stories about the appointment of our new president, Tachi Cazal; the celebration of AFS Japan’s 50th Anniversary; We All Lived Together in a Little, Crooked House, an original story written by one of AFS ambulance drivers, among other stories of topical and archival interest.
The Janus honors the founders of AFS, the World War II drivers, returnees, volunteers and early staff of the AFS student exchange program. Its namesake, the Roman god of gates and doors and of beginnings and endings, is represented with a double-faced head, each looking in opposite directions; so does our publication, look both to the past and to the future, and also brings you the news of the AFS leaders of today.
We hope you enjoy this issue.
