6/18/2008 - Europe Day Celebrates Intercultural Dialogue

In 2008, European institutions celebrate the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, and EUROPE DAY on Saturday 7 June, joined in to encourage citizens to explore the diversity of our heritage and be open to our different cultural traditions. Cultural diversity within Europe continues to grow. The expansion of the European Union to 27 Member States and globalization have increased the multicultural character of our society. In this context, the intercultural dialogue plays an increasingly important role to improve the coexistence of different cultural identities and beliefs.

On Saturday 7 June, the doors of the following European institutions in Brussels, Belgium, were open to the public: – European Parliament, – Council of the European Union, – European Commission, – Economic and Social Committee of the European Union, – Committee of the Regions of the European Union.

Outside the European Parliament there were games and creative workshops on the theme of Europe, pedagogical and educational presentations by NGOs and associations, orchestras and choirs from Romania, Croatia and Poland, information stands, ‘Citizen Café’ with public debates on the theme of intercultural dialogue, stands focusing on tourism and discovering the EU Members States, song and dance, and many more activities.
