11/19/2008 - Celebrating Ramadan with over 700 AFSers

On October 20th, AFS Alumni and their natural families, hosted Participants and their host families, Volunteers, schools, officials from different ministries, sponsors, AFS friends and supporters all gathered in the heart of Cairo at the Saladin Citadel to celebrate an AFS Ramadan Iftar, a meal served at sun set, to break the day’s fast.
After the Iftar meal, AFS Egypt Chair, Adel Mahmoud, welcomed the guests with a brief word, affirming the AFS commitment towards creating a more just and peaceful world. Sherifa Fayez, Partner Director, spoke about the progress of AFS Egypt and the expansion of its programs and partnerships which has created more channels of intercultural communication and increased the opportunities for young Egyptian ambassadors to represent their country abroad while exploring other cultures.

A Documentary movie prepared by OTV, a national youth T.V. channel, was then displayed to the audience; it featured AFS Egypt’s “AFS Intercultural Peace Caravan”.
A number of AFS alumni, hosted students, and their host families were interviewed by the MC of event, Dr. Ibrahim El-Kerdany, an AFS Alumni from 1964, who is currently the spokesperson for the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean. Among the interviewees were alumni from the 60s and 80s, they spoke about their AFS experience and it’s impact on their lives until this moment. This great event was carried out with the help of our diligent AFS volunteers and is representative of the many innovative strides AFS Egypt has taken in the last six years.
